Care of Bandages and Splints

If your pet has been discharged from the hospital with a bandage or splint, this will need to be checked regularly by you at home.

Please follow the following instructions:

1. In most cases your pet will have an Elizabethan collar sent home with them - it is vital that this remain on at all times until the bandage or splint has been removed to prevent them from licking or chewing.

2. Please keep the bandage clean and dry - cover it with a plastic bag or a Dog Leggs bandage cover when you take your pet outside. Be sure to remove the bag once you are back inside or moisture may develop in the bandage

3. Check your pet’s exposed toes daily for any swelling, odor, pain, coolness or discharge - if these are seen please contact the ASEH surgery staff.

4. If the bandage or splint loosens at the top check to see if the toes are still visible. If they are, the bandage will most likely be OK, If the toes are no longer visible, it may mean the bandage has slipped down and needs to be replaced, Please call ASEH surgery staff as soon as possible.

5. Check around the top of the bandage - if chafing is present, you may add some padding or baby powder to the affected area

6. Have the bandage changed immediately if:
a. the bandage is damp or foul smelling
b.If your pet’s use of his/her limb has changed
c. if your pet seems painful in the bandage or if they cannot feel their toes when you pinch them.
d.If your pets toes become swollen

If you have any questions regarding your pet’s splint or bandage, please do not hesitate to call and speak with the surgery staff at ASEH. Our staff is always happy to help you. Thank you for letting us give your pet the extra special type of care that he/she deserves.
